Alonso Daniel Ortiz

April 21, 2006 — January 15, 2018

The eternally beloved Alonso Daniel Ortiz, son of Nicolas Ortiz and Maria Isabel Ortiz Tellez-Giron, peacefully passed away on the dawn of January 15th, 2018. This young man courageously fought a battle with cancer of a period of two years and eight months, before finally realizing that God and the angels above called his name. He has been survived by his mother, father, and by his brothers Nicolas and Diego, uncles, aunts, cousins, grandparents and his Beta Fish “Güiro”.

Even on his darkest days of struggle, he showed a vigorous spirit, filled to the brim with a positive attitude, a witty, sarcastic, and sharp sense of humor. An especially close companion to Diego and Nicolas, he illuminated our household and made our lives worth living with his radiant presence, making the last twelve years a truly amazing journey, accompanying us from San Francisco to Boston, down to the Caribbean, and up to the Canadian border in Detroit.

Alonso was a foodie, a sophisticated eater of paella, tapas, salmon, shrimp and lobster; honoring his heritage, he also enjoyed traditional Mexican foods prepared by Mom, Dad and his local friends, specifically chips and salsa, menudo, pozole, tamales and tacos de carne asada. On the other hand, his wardrobe was all about silly t-shirts with different themes: Chuy’s, Star Wars, and Lego. During his chemo treatments, he popularized the Yoda hat.

In his spare time, Alonso enjoyed Star Wars and most of Pixar Movies, specifically Cars, and on TV: The Food Channel. He watched movies eating pop-corn with Tajin chile-powder, Dots and Swedish-fish. He played Nintendo video games, mostly Mario Brothers and Pikmin; he loved Pokémon and Yo-kai Watch cartoons, cards and games. Also, he was a big Lego creator and builder.

Alonso loved school, but he loved snow days too; he shined in Math, Science and friendship. He played baseball upon his diagnostic, he played the violin and he debuted with the St. Susanna Hispanic Choir.

Although his body is no longer with us, his spirit remains strong within us, and will never vanish. He left a legacy of life enjoyment regardless the circumstances. We will never forget how precious he was in our lives!

Alonso’s funeral services will be on Saturday January 20, 2018. Public visitation from 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM at Hodapp Funeral Home located at 8815 Cincinnati Columbus Rd, West Chester Township, OH 45069. Mass will be at 2:00 PM in St. Susanna Catholic Church ta 616 Reading Rd, Mason, OH 45040.
