Obituary for Betty Ann Hisle, 86, died Jan. 1, 2018

A woman who was once crowned a local prom queen spent the rest of her life treating everyone else like royalty.

Betty A. Hisle, then known by her maiden name, Schulz, wore the Bellevue High School, Ky., prom crown in 1949--and for more than five decades afterward, endeared herself to hundreds of people she encountered in work with the general public.

Ms. Hisle’s gracious attitude served her well in various roles, as an executive secretary for law firms in Los Angeles, Calif., and Houston, Texas; as co-owner of the former Hisle’s Sporting Goods store in College Hill; and as a realtor for Century21 and Sibcy Cline in the Cincinnati area.

While working as a concierge for Evergreen Retirement Community in Hartwell, Ms. Hisle was named “First Impression Winner” from among 3,000 employees of Senior Lifestyle Corp. in 1998, recognizing the positive impression she made on the company’s behalf. Evergreen designated Feb. 5, 1999 as “Betty Hisle Day” to congratulate her for that honor. She retired from Evergreen in 2013 after 18 years.

But the best job she ever had was being a mother.  Ms. Hisle thought she might not be able to have children, but bore a son, Michael, when she was 35; the two of them were utterly devoted to each other and remained in daily contact until her death on Monday, Jan. 1, 2018. A second son, Matthew William, died in 1967 after living just one day.

Ms. Hisle, 86, was a “lady” in the truest sense of the word, continually expressing kindness to even casual acquaintances. She behaved with impeccable manners and graciousness; she had a friendly, endearing quality about her.

“She added so much to everyone’s life,” said one woman who lived with her in her final years at Sem Laurels Retirement Community in Milford.

Ms. Hisle was a member of White Oak Christian Church for many years and served as a Sunday school teacher there. She lived most of her life on Cincinnati’s West Side.

She was born Dec. 11, 1931, in Dayton, Ky., to Albert Schulz and the former Elva Cummins. She was a 1949 graduate of Bellevue High School.

One of her fondest childhood memories: The Cincinnati Netherland Plaza Hotel, now known as the Hilton, opened the year she was born and she performed a dance recital in its famed Hall of Mirrors when she was in grade school.

Ms. Hisle leaves her son, Michael (Janice); brother Charles (Mary Ann); granddaughters Ashley and Sarah; all in Greater Cincinnati; and three nephews: Kevin (Lois) Schulz in Harlan, Ky.; Kurt (Janice) in Cincinnati; and Kris (Patty) in Dayton, Ohio.

Visitation from 12 Noon until  Services at  1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, at Hodapp Funeral Home, 6041 Hamilton Ave, Cincinnati, Ohio 45224.
