Catherine T. Mortensen, 84, formerly of West Chester Ohio and most recently of Hamilton, Ohio, passed away March 21, 2016 in the Richard Neubauer, MD and John Hughes Hospice Center at Maple Knoll Village in Cincinnati. She was born in Almonesson, NJ on October 5, 1931 to Clarence & Magdalena (Kraus) Jaggard. She married Jerome L. Mortensen in St. Agnes Catholic Church, Blackwood, NJ on August 19, 1953. After 49 years of marriage Jerome passed away in 2002.

Catherine’s lifetime vocation was as a Registered Nurse, working in the Mercy Health system for more than 35 years, retiring in 1993. During her career she assisted in opening Mercy South Hospital’s first oncology unit and served as their assistant director of nursing. Early on, during her work at Mercy South, she lived in West Chester and was an active member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. She and Jerry moved from the area after their retirement to Tennessee where they made their home for many years.

Catherine was a woman of strong Catholic faith, attending Mass daily, and serving on various church committees and as a Eucharistic Minister. During her life she devoted herself to her family and finding adventure in traveling around the world in retirement; many trips with her best friend and sister, Anna. She embarked on a religious pilgrimage to Lourdes, France & Medjugorje Shrine, and charitable mission trips to Haiti as well as adventures to Paris, Rome the Scandinavian countries, a cruise down the Rhine River and a trip through the Alaskan Inner Passage with sister-in-law, Vivian.

Catherine always enjoyed a great trip but her first love was her family, of which she was very proud. She was always there for them, from Baptisms, First Communions, Confirmations and school activities. She always made herself available to help with any project that came up, including chaperoning her granddaughter’s trip to Spain.

Catherine is survived by her children, Gail (Paul) Crowell, Lisa (Steve) Golden, Sharon (Jack) Lewis, Alan J. Mortensen, Philip (Pamela) Mortensen, Marianne (Bryan) Leininger, Roger (Dianne) Mortensen, Joan (Jerry) Mustain and Glen (Susan) Mortensen. Her grandchildren, Matt Garrett, Nicole Garrett, Rachel Mortensen, Maureen (Randy) Sheeler, Stephanie Freeze, Valerie Hall, Derek (Natasha) Mortensen, David (Lauren) Mortensen, Shanthi (Derek) Johnson, Alisha Leininger, Ian (Shawna) Leininger, Nicholas Mortensen, Amandrea Mortensen, Angela (Sean) Murray, Melinda Mustain, Jessica Mortensen, Kyle Mortensen and Ryan Mortensen. Her great-grandchildren, Bryant & Garrett Sheehan, Parker, Owen & Evan Williams, Brandon (Jenna) Nesslage, Krystal Nesslage, Tyler Wright, Ashley Christacopulos, Taylor Freeze, Stasia Freeze, Devon Green and Jacqueline Foster; Tristan & Phillip Mortensen, Xavier & Brock Mortensen, Riley Johnson, Maya, Jack & Skylie Leininger, Claire & Lillian Murray and great great- grandson Parker Nesslage. Also surviving is her sister, Anna (Jaggard) Haas and sister-in-law Mary (Joseph) Jaggard along with many nieces and nephews who loved their Aunt Cathy very much! Catherine was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jerome, siblings Joseph and Clarence and granddaughters Danielle Marie Garrett Sheehan and Karen Catherine Mortensen.

A Funeral Mass for Catherine will be celebrated at 10:30 AM, Saturday, April 2, 2016, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 9080 Cincinnati-Dayton Road, West Chester, Ohio 45069. The family will receive family and friends from 9:30 AM, until the time of Mass (10:30), in the Gathering Space at the church. Burial will follow Mass in the West Chester Township Cemetery next to her husband Jerome. The family would like to invite everyone to join them for a time of fellowship and refreshments at the Wetherington Golf and Country Club, 7337 Country Club Lane, West Chester, Ohio 45069 immediately following the interment service.

For those wishing to honor Catherine, it is suggested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be directed to Hospice of Cincinnati, 4360 Cooper Road, Cincinnati, OH 45242.
