Charles Larry Abernathy

Charles Larry Abernathy (Larry), 64, went to be with his Savior Friday, December 15, 2017, at his home in West Chester, Ohio. Larry was the cherished husband of Diane Stevens Abernathy, and dearly-loved father of Joshua (Josh) Paul Abernathy and James Gideon Abernathy. He was preceded in death by his father, William J. T. Abernathy, and his sister, Peggy Abernathy. He is survived by his mother, Geneva Abernathy, his sister, Debbie Abernathy Weaver, and nieces Jennifer Pruss , Jodie Weaver, and Jillian Weaver. Larry was born in Athens, Alabama, grew up in Converse, Indiana, and graduated from Oak Hill High School in 1971. He went on to receive both a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. He worked at General Electric Aircraft Engines in Evendale, Ohio, for forty-one years, where he was widely respected by his co-workers. Larry served many years as an Elder at Center Pointe Christian Church, Liberty Township, Ohio and prior to his move to West Chester, Larry served as an Elder at White Oak Christian Church in Colerain Township, Ohio. Larry’s passion was coaching boys not only in baseball (and other sports), but also in life lessons. He was a loved and respected mentor to many boys both on sports teams and at his church. Larry was looking forward to retiring from GE and increasing his time mentoring boys and developing them into mature Christian men. A Celebration service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evening, December 19, 2017, at Center Pointe Christian Church, 5962 Hamilton Mason Rd, Liberty Township, Ohio, 45011. There will be a half-hour visitation before the service, starting at 6 p.m., and a short reception following the service. In keeping with Larry’s retirement vision, memorials may be made to the Coach Abernathy Memorial Fund, c/o 5/3 Bank, 7700 Cox Rd., West Chester, OH 45069. This fund will be used to establish the Coach Abernathy Foundation, whose vision will be preparing boys for life and developing them into mature Christian men by overseeing mentoring programs, sports camps and father/son activities
