Charles William (Butch) Knabe, 97, passed away at his home at the Pinebrook Retirement Community in Milford, OH on December 21, 2020. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Kathleen Marie (Mahlke), and great-granddaughter, Charlotte Rae Aman.
Formerly of Youngstown and West Chester, OH, Butch was born in Wheeling, WV in March 1923 to Albert and Marie (Wagner) Knabe. He was a 1941 graduate of Wheeling High School where he ran track and played football. His love of the game of football took him to Belmont Abbey and then West Virginia University. Butch’s football career was interrupted during WWII, joining the US Army and honorably serving his country in Italy.
Upon returning to civilian life, he went on to graduate from West Virginia University and began a successful career in Sales and Marketing for both Remington Rand and Diebold. Once retired, Butch enjoyed gardening, golfing (and making golf clubs), painting with watercolor, socializing with the Fun Timers group at Crestview Presbyterian Church and staying connected with the young men he loved from his Promise Keepers group. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor, his teasing, his wonderful stories, his signature handshake, his commitment to invest in those he cared about, his inspirational advice, his humbleness, and the twinkle in his eye.
Despite his countless business achievements and awards, Butch was most proud of his ever-growing family: loving father of Mark Knabe (Barb), Craig Knabe (Steff) and Karen Diskin (Tom); proud and generous grandfather of Matt Knabe (Amy), Scott Knabe (Sara), Mike Knabe (Morgan), Katie Buffington (Ryan), Hannah Aman (Peter) and Ryan Diskin; blessed great-grandfather of Gabriel, Henry, Lennon, Callahan, Vera, Peyton, and Louise. He is also survived by his brother, Alan Knabe (Ruth). He loved the Lord and believed in the power of His saving Grace. We love you Dad, Poppa and Great-Poppa Butch. You will truly be missed, but never forgotten. A celebratory memorial service honoring a man who was deeply loved by family and friends alike is planned for Saturday, September 18 at 12:00 at Crestview Presbyterian Church 9463 Cincinnati Columbus Road West Chester, OH 45069
Memorial contributions can be made to Matthew 25: Ministries in Cincinnati, OH.
