Florence Patricia “Pat†Miles passed away at home on September 19. She was born in her grandparents’ home on March 17, 1921 in Elsmere, Kentucky. Her parents were Samuel and Ida Glacken. Mrs. Miles was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Robert H. Miles. She is survived by her four children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her children are Sam Miles of Madison, Virginia, Tami Showen of Wilmington, Judy Marshall of Wilmington, and Frank Miles of Herndon, Virginia. Mrs. Miles’ grandchildren are Brandon and Lauren Showen, Shannon and Megan Marshall and Ian and Sean Miles. Her great-grandchildren are Adriana and Collin Dobkins. Mrs. Miles graduated from Lloyd Memorial High School in 1939 and attended the University of Cincinnati. She retired from Wilmington City Schools where she served as assistant librarian at Wilmington High School and school secretary at Denver and Holmes Elementary schools. As a young woman, Mrs. Miles was captain of her high school tennis team and secretary of the Pep Club. During World War II she was an Air Raid Warden and volunteered with the Red Cross and the U.S.O. Later, she was very active in the National Federation of Women’s Clubs, where she was Kindergarten Chairman – this was the group that advocated for kindergarten to be available to every child in Kentucky. While her children were growing up, Mrs. Miles was President of the PTO, President of the Music program and active in leading Cub Scout and Brownie troops, When the family lived in Japan, Mrs. Miles volunteered at the base hospital, helping with the wounded flown in from Vietnam. Mrs. Miles continued her life of service later in life by volunteering at the Krohn Conservatory in Cincinnati and by being an active member of the Cottingham Retirement Community. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 28 at 3 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church of Wilmington, 840 Timber Glen Drive. Burial services will take place Monday, September 30, at 10 a.m. at Highland Cemetery, 2167 Dixie Highway, in Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky.
