Frances S. Calkins

d. April 9, 2021

Frances S. Calkins passed away Friday, April 9, 2021, at Maple Knoll nursing home in Springdale, Ohio, at the age of 98.  Her passing came after prolonged confinement to her bed in the nursing home.  She was preceded in death by her husband of many years, Vincent P. Calkins, and she is survived by two sons: Roderick P. Calkins and Gregory P. Calkins.  She also has four grandchildren: Sascha, Gavin, Clancy, and Agnes, as well as one great-grandson: Jasper.

Frances had several undergraduate and graduate degrees. She worked for the government on the Manhattan Project during World War II, and met her husband in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. After moving to Ohio in 1953, she worked as a teacher and school psychologist for many years with the Cincinnati Public Schools.  In later years, she was active with the Coast Guard Auxiliary, an avocation she dearly loved. An outstanding bridge player, she was also fond of reading, developing a wealth of knowledge in many areas.  After she lost her husband, she lived alone for more than forty years.  Her love and vibrant personality will be sorely missed by family and friends.

She will be interred in her hometown of Hughesville, Pennsylvania, according to her wishes. No service will be held locally. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a possible donation in her memory to the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
