George Tien, age 91, died peacefully in his sleep under the nurturing care of the VITAS Hospice Care Center on Sunday, December 17, 2017. He was born and educated in Beijing, China, before coming to the United States to study English & linguistics in St. Louis, MO, and communications for a year at the Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, AL. He worked as an interpreter for the United Nations in Japan during the Korean War, and then became a high school English teacher in Taiwan. He eventually started teaching Chinese to an American missionary, and then became his interpreter, which led to George’s baptism into Christ in 1963.
George married his beloved wife, Martha, in 1970, and they moved to the United States for him to attend the White’s Ferry Road School of Preaching in West Monroe, LA. After that, he preached the gospel over the radio waves to China. When China opened its doors to tourists in 1982, he was also able to go and spread the Truth in person. George spent the next 30 years as a missionary to China, teaching in packed homes and churches, lecturing in seminaries, and training preachers for the Lord’s Kingdom. Countless souls have been saved because of the good work George & Martha did in China.
George is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Martha; his daughter Anna Cranford and her husband Kevin of Memphis, TN; his son Timothy and his wife Sarah of Seattle, WA. He also leaves behind three grandchildren, Caleb Cranford and Lucy and Henry Tien, as well as a host of people in China whose lives were touched by his teaching of God’s Word.
Visitation will be at noon on Thursday, December 21, 2017, at the Northeast Church of Christ in Cincinnati, OH. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 pm, with Grady Smith officiating. Burial will be directly after at Oak Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are made by Hodapp Funeral Home.
