Hazel graduated from Wayne Township School at the top of her class and went on to work at a local bank. In 1962 she married Logan Miller and they relocated to Liberty Township to begin their lives together. Hazel and Logan built a home and had three children during the 1960’s. In the mid-1970’s, after her youngest was in school, Hazel began her 25 year career in the Lakota School Systems, starting as a substitute bus driver. Hazel moved up through the ranks from bus driver all the way to Transportation Director. As Director, Hazel had 70 employees and was responsible for the safe and timely transportation for all of the students in the Lakota School systems. After 15+ successful years as Director, Hazel retired in the early 2000’s. She was also active as a volunteer in the Pisgah Youth Organization for 12 years and was an active volunteer parent throughout her children’s time in the school system. Hazel was an avid gardener and always had beautiful flowers and an assortment of fruits and vegetables in her gardens. She loved to travel and enjoy new adventures, from trips to Jerusalem to parasailing on the shores of the Atlantic. Above all Hazel loved being a grandmother. “Nanny”, as she was known, focused much of her time and energy enjoying her five grandsons, making sure they always had fun together. Hazel attended the Briel Church in Middletown, Ohio, for many years and was active in church activities and Bible study groups. She will be missed by her family, friends and neighbors.
Hazel is preceded in death by her mother and father, Ida Ruth (Gillman) and Cordell Downing, and her dear husband, Logan Miller.
