Howard Henry Hudepohl

HUDEPOHL, Fr. Howard, OFM, a missionary teacher for most of his life as a Franciscan Friar, died Saturday, March 29, at St. Margaret Hall in Cincinnati. He was 86 years old. A native of Cincinnati, Howard Henry Hudepohl was the son of the late Henry Hudepohl and Florence Tieman of St. Bernard, Ohio. He made solemn vows as a Friar in 1949 and was ordained a priest in 1954 in Oldenburg, Ind. After several years in parish work he found his true calling as a teacher, first at Roger Bacon High School in Cincinnati (1958-1966 and 1967-1973), then at colleges and formation houses in Monaco, Michigan, the Philippines, Israel, Zaire and Zambia. He served in South Africa in the 1980s during the breakdown of apartheid. Returning to the States, he was Chaplain at St. Clare Retirement Community from 1998-2013 and lived in retirement at St. Clement Friary in St. Bernard until recently. Fr. Hudepohl was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert, and Fr. Al Hudepohl, OFM, and is survived by twin brothers Jerome and James, both of Cincinnati, sister Jane Hudepohl Clark of Traverse City, Mich., and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, at St. Clement Church in St. Bernard, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 7 p.m. Burial is at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, at St. Mary Cemetery in St. Bernard.
