LIERL, Joan C., passed peacefully on October 31, 2015, at the age of 84. She was preceded in death by her parents, Olive (nee Lyon) and Paul Cain, her brother David Cain, and her husband Raymond Lierl. She is survived by her loving and devoted partner Paul Wilbers, her children, Kay Lierl Sunderman, Jerry (Beth) Lierl, Caroline (Frank) Spataro and Janet (Barry) Merten, and 10 grandchildren: Kristin (Sean) Luther, Andy, Erin and Carrie Lierl; Eric Sunderman; Heather and Neil Spataro; and Hannah, Nicholas and Julia Merten.
Joan was born during the depression and she was the apple of her daddy's eye. Her father was adopted from the Orphan Train in New York and raised by a priest in Kentucky. He found work as a handyman. Her mother was educated as a librarian. So she had the best of both worlds--she was a smart cookie with a fierce sense of independence and a silly sense of humor. Joan remained feisty with an ornery Irish streak throughout her lifetime.
She graduated from Our Lady of Angels High School in 1949 and, after raising four children and while working full time, returned to night school and earned a degree in Business from the University of Cincinnati.
She married Ray Lierl in 1951 and became a dedicated mother to four children. She was a stay at home mom until her youngest was eight, at which point she went back to work to help provide for her family. She held many positions, from working at a Dodge dealership, to a dermatologist's office, to finally settling in at the University of Cincinnati where she remained employed for over 20 years until her retirement at age 65. She also worked at Good Samaritan Hospital on the weekends.
Joan always emphasized the importance of education to her kids so she was very pleased that her three daughters earned master's degrees and her son became an MD, knowing that her sacrifices helped make that happen.
Joan loved animals, laughing and getting together with her family. Her silly sense of humor and her giggle will be missed.
