JoAnn Summer-Neus
JoAnn was born Oct. 31, 1938 in Cincinnati. She attended elementary school at St. George’s in Clifton where she met the Sisters from the order of Notre Dame de Namur.
She began high school in Columbus, Ohio and finished as a Postulant at Mt. Notre Dame High School and entered the order in 1955. She began her teaching career at St. Peter’s in Chicago and from there she went to St. Victor’s in Calumet City. She was able to take Saturday classes at St. Joseph’s in Indiana to begin her Bachelor’s. She came to Dayton to teach at Ascension School. While there she was able to finish her degree at Dayton University. Then, she went to Chicago to get her Masters in “Inner City Study”. She came back to Dayton staying at St. Agnes Convent and worked at Longfellow as the School Community Co-Ordinator. She was known as Sr. JoAnn in that public school.
JoAnn left the order and became a teacher at Longfellow. She then had jobs in the administrative section of the Dayton Public Schools. One of those was as head of security for Dayton Public Schools.
In 1998, she married Bill Neus and moved to Cincinnati.
Through all her life adventures, she had a deep relationship with God. This was expressed in many ways: her prayer life, journaling, dream work as well as her care for the less fortunate.
She is survived by her husband Bill, brother Bob and a niece, Sandy, nephews, Bob and Joey, and good friends, Jan and Judy.
She suffered with Alzheimer’s disease for 14 years. May she rest in peace.
