John Oliver Black

April 22, 1943 — February 10, 2019

Mr. John Oliver Black, 75, passed away unexpectedly on February 10, 2019 at his residence in Clifton.  He was affectionately known as “Farmer John” by the numerous friends and patrons who purchased his produce at his stand inside Ace Hardware.
John was born in Lexington, KY, on April 22, 1943 to the late Benjamin W. Black, Jr. and the late Mary Katherine Webb Black.  He was a 1961 graduate of Ironton High School.  He was stationed in Germany during a portion of his four-year tour with the United States Air Force in the 1960s.  John worked for the Ohio Power Company and was also a substitute teacher in addition to other jobs he held.

He was an avid golfer for many years, playing predominantly at Reeves Golf Course and the Ironton Country Club.  John was blessed with many grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them, both in Ohio and during his visits to coastal South Carolina.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Alice Jane Hopkins Black.  He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Moriarty Gates Black, of Cincinnati; a brother, Thomas Black, of Ironton; a son, John P. (Kim) Black of South Carolina; grandsons Phillip and Andrew Black, of South Carolina; stepsons Jay R. Gates and family and Kristopher Gates, of Cincinnati.

There is a joint service for John and Betsy Black in Cincinnati, Friday March 1st at Calvary Episcopal Church ,3766 Clifton Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45220 at 12 noon.  As well as a  joint memorial service Saturday March 2nd, at 1:00 PM at St. Joseph Church, 905 S 5th St, Ironton, OH 45638.
