Robert J. Rothan, DDS

June 23, 1936 — August 24, 2024

Cincinnati

Robert “Bob” Rothan of Cincinnati, Ohio passed away peacefully in his home with his wife, Helen, by his side on August 23, 2024. He was 88.

Bob was born on June 23, 1936 and grew up in the Bond Hill neighborhood of Cincinnati in a loving family. He was a graduate of Xavier High School, Xavier University (magna cum laude), and Ohio State University, where he earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree, following his older brother, Paul, into the dental profession.

Bob and his first wife, Ann, were longtime residents of Greenhills, Ohio, where they raised their five children. Dr. Bob had his dental practice in Finneytown for over fifty years. From 1970 on, Bob integrated the science of nutrition into his dental practice and thus could be considered one of the first holistic dentists in the country. In 1975, he and Ann co-founded the PSI (physical, spiritual, intellectual) Center in Greenhills – which became a local Cincinnati hub of progressive spiritual thought and practice during the years it was open.

Bob loved to fish and was a voracious reader. Though he passionate about nutrition (especially the importance of magnesium) and healthy eating, Bob had a weakness for whipped cream and luscious desserts. As a trendsetter, Dr. Bob had five suits: all powder blue, that endured for about thirty years.

Bob was a devout Christian and an incredibly generous, caring and modest man. He and his second wife, Helen, raised their granddaughter, Rachel, and 2 great granddaughters as their own. Bob was a beloved member of several Christian congregations in Cincinnati. He will be deeply missed by his family and wide community of friends and former patients in the Cincinnati area and beyond.

Bob is survived by his wife, Helen, his five children: Juliane DeArraya and Lynn, Matt, Elizabeth and Russell Rothan; his two stepchildren, Bruce McCormick and Julie Rich; ten grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
