Beloved husband of Ruth Schaefer (nee Norvell) for 60 years. Loving father of Rosa (Darrell) Singleton and Martin (Nancy) Schaefer. Dear grandfather of Sarah Elizabeth Singleton Burns. Dear great grandfather of Ava Grace Burns. Brother of Bessie Kibbey, Buddy (Kathy) Schaefer, and Cheryl Combs. Brother-in-law of Janice and Susan Norvell. Son of the late Robert William and Bessie Ellanora Schaefer. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Bob passed away Friday, February 22, 2019 at age 85. Visitation will take place on Monday, February 25, 2019, from 6 – 8 PM at Hodapp Funeral Home, 6410 Cincinnati Dayton Rd., Liberty Twp., OH 45044. Funeral service will be held at 10 AM on Tuesday, February 26, 2019, at Hodapp Funeral Home, 6410 Cincinnati Dayton Rd., Liberty Twp., OH 45044. Robert Served honorably in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict era. He was a1st Class Machinist Mate aboard the U.S.S. Hyman DD732. And in his later years he became a proud member of the Tin Can Sailors organization, and a participant in the Honor Flight program.
Robert started his machinist training as a tool and die maker until he answered the call of his country. Upon his discharge he returned to employment at the General Tool Company where he worked for 45years and 11 months which at the time was the longest continuous employment record.
Robert not only served his country and family he also served his community. Robert was the Asst. Fire chief of the Liberty township fire department and also in the first class of graduating EMTs during the late 60’s to late 70’s
Robert was also a dedicated and passionate member of the Benjamin Franklin Lodge 719 in Hamilton Ohio. He faithfully served the lodge throughout his life rising to the level of Worshipful Master of his lodge. After his tenure Robert continued his service in various roles including Chaplain spanning a 50 years career of commitment. In his lodge career Robert also was a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite.
Anyone who knew Robert knew of his love of woodworking. As a master craftsman he took great joy in creating amazing pieces, many friends and family were recipients of his efforts and his works have become beloved family heirlooms. He was always willing to help others in their projects.
Another favorite activity of Roberts was fishing. From crafting the lures to fish with, to standing for hours casting into the ocean or lakes for fish.
In a world of wonderful people Robert truly stood out. He was loved by all who knew him, he went through life with a servant’s heart and the world was a better place because of him.
