Seth Perkins Staples died at home with his wife, Grace, on Friday, January 18, 2019 after a two year illness. He was 95. Born in Butler, PA, to Walter Brickle Staples and Carrie May (Rhodes) Staples, he survived 6 siblings. He was christened for his father’s great, great uncle who was one of the three founders of Yale Law School. Raised in Butler, he received A.B. from The University of Pennsylvania, M. Div. from Union Theological Seminary, N.Y., N.Y. and S.T.M. from Hamma Theological Seminary, Springfield, OH.
He served in the U.S. Army Corps, 450 th Bomber Group, as a tail gunner, who was shot down and served 9 months in German Stalag Luft IV. During the latter 3 months of imprisonment, the hundreds of prisoners were marched away from the Baltic Sea through the coldest German winter in 100 years as the Germans sought to elude the advancing Russians.
This experience influenced his call to ministry. Ordained in the United Church of Christ in 1953, he served congregations in New York, Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. He also served 4 years as the Cincinnati Coordinator of the federally funded Alcohol Safety Action Project and 12 years as the Director of the Hamilton County Welfare Department. He also coordinated the induction of the 911 emergency system to the area.
He is survived by his beloved wife Grace (nee Durflinger) Staples, loving father of Jeffrey J. Staples and Polly (Staples) Wilmot, cherished grandfather of Corey and Shelby Hager and uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 11 AM at Grace Episcopal Church, 5501 Hamilton Ave, College Hill, 45224. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a favorite charity.
