Vell Hatter Snyder, 97, of Fairfield Township, Ohio, passed away on November 11, 2023.
She was born in Liberty, Kentucky on August 31, 1926 to Coleman and Ruby (Gilpin) Hatter. Vell attended Middleburg High School in Casey County Kentucky before attending Berea College, majoring in education. While working in Cincinnati with her sisters at Wright Aeronautics during World War II, she met her future husband, Gerald (Jerry) Snyder. They were married on November 18, 1950 and resided in Cincinnati Ohio, where they raised their four children.
Vell began her career in education teaching in a two room school house in Casey County, Kentucky. After her marriage she taught in Newport City Schools in Newport, Kentucky. She taught seventh grade science, first and second grades, finally ending her career as a remedial reading specialist. While teaching and raising her children, Vell completed her Bachelors and Masters Degree in Education at the University of Cincinnati. She always encouraged her children and grandchildren to pursue their educational goals. She was a role model to them by overcoming many adversities to obtain her education.
She was preceded in death by her husband of forty-nine years, Gerald Snyder, her parents Coleman and Ruby Gilpin Hatter, her sisters Maurine Hatter Ellison, Melenee Hatter Roberts, Josephine Hatter Henderson, and brothers, Melvin Hatter, Herman Hatter, and Carlos Hatter. She was also preceded in death by her son-in-law Jeffrey Tennyson Ross.
She is survived by her son David Snyder and wife Julie, daughters Rev. Nancy Ross-Zimmerman and husband Craig, Karen Albrecht and husband Kevin, Dr. Amy Snyder and husband Charley Frank. She is survived by grandchildren: Andy and Katie Snyder, Robert Ross and wife Debbie, Ashley Ross and husband Claude Cassion, Jessica Zimmerman and husband Michael Andresen, Michael Albrecht and wife Nancy, Drew Albrecht, Ben Albrecht and wife Jennifer Klimek., Sam and Avery Frank. She is survived by great-grandchildren: Tennyson, Delaney, Millicent Ross, Patrick Mujambere, Noah Cassion, Ruby, Oliver, Zelda, and Solia Vell Albrecht. She is survived by brother Vernon Hatter and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her good friend and caregiver Genie Parsons. Her family will remember her as someone who was devoted to them, loved reading, sewing, quilting, gardening, winning at cards and Scrabble.
Vell was a long time member of Elmwood-Carthage Presbyterian Church and Lakeside Presbyterian Church as well as attending Northminster Presbyterian Church. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Chi Chapter.
Services will be held at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 703 Compton Road in Finneytown on Saturday, November 25 at 2:00PM with visitation following.
