SMITH, Virginia Lee (“Jinny”), 83, of Cincinnati, unexpectedly passed away on January 4. She had been ill for a short period of time. She was born in Hamilton, Ohio on June 28, 1930, the only child of George and Thelma (Eisele) Smith, who preceded her in death. She is survived by one cousin, Patty Solazzo of Melrose Park, Illinois, and an abundant array of close friends especially in the Hamilton, Cincinnati, and Dayton, Ohio areas. Jinny graduated from Notre Dame High School, Hamilton, in 1948 and worked as a receptionist/secretary in the offices of an oral surgeon and a family physician. Throughout her employment she worked diligently to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Xavier University, Cincinnati, by attending class evenings and Saturdays. Subsequently she also earned a Masters Degree in history at Xavier. Jinny taught American History and Civics at Oak Hills High School, Cincinnati, until her retirement. She was well loved by her students, many of whom remained in touch with her and visited her throughout their careers. Her interest and informed knowledge of current events was a characteristic that made her an excellent conversationalist and a very compassionate human being. Her sense of humor and love of gardening and nature made her easy to know and love. Following Jinny’s request, her remains have been donated to the University of Cincinnati Medical School. Friends, former students, neighbors and associates are invited to attend a Memorial Mass at Xavier University’s Bellarmine Chapel on Saturday, January 11 at 10:00 AM. A luncheon reception will follow immediately at the Cintas Center adjacent to the Chapel for those attending. Memorial contributions may be made in Jinny’s memory to Xavier University, 3800 Victory Parkway, Cincinnati, Ohio.
