Wally was born in Van Horne, Iowa and grew up in the farming community there. He excelled in school and graduated from High School at the age of 16 and went on to attend Iowa State University. He was drafted into the army at the end of WWII and served stateside for 1 year. Wally spent almost his entire career, 45 years, as an aeronautical engineer with General Electric’s jet engine division, retiring at the age of 70. He took commitments seriously and gave to his church and community where ever he thought he could help. Many years of service would include leading in Boy Scouts, serving on the local school board, helping through the Kiwanis Club, and filling needs for Reach OutLakota. He was instrumental in getting the approval for the Union Centre Boulevard exit off I-75. Wally loved to design and build as was evident not only at his private home but for projects in the community such as Reach Out Lakota’s building and the West Chester Covered Bridge. Wally would tell you his treasures in life were not his things but his wife and family. He loved “his Bobbie” and cherished his 11 children. His last words were of his great love for his family and friends and how thankful he was to get to be a part of their life.
