William “Bill” Joseph Schumacher, age 80, of Butler County, OH, passed away on June 30, 2024. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Harry F. Schumacher and Angeline A. Schumacher (nee Castaldi). He was a graduate of West Catholic Boys School and Drexel University. Bill had a distinguished 41-year career in metallurgy, developing innovative stainless steel alloys. He has nine patents, including one on the anti-galling stainless steel NITRONIC 60.
He is survived by his wife, Gaylene Schumacher (nee DiLorenzo); his sons Michael and Matthew (Nucharee) Schumacher; his daughter Theresa (Matthew) Taylor; his grandchildren Alisa, John, Joseph, Andrew, William, Maggie, James, and Carolanne; his stepchildren Matthew May; Michael (Angelo); and Allison (Kyle); and his sister, Patricia (Steve) Henry. He was preceded in death by his first wife Barbara, his sister Maria Murray (Bill), and his brother Harry Schumacher.
For enjoyment, Bill was an avid traveler, an expert at word puzzles, and an intellectual “master” of Sudoku. His Catholic faith was very important to him, and he was actively involved in his faith community (Our Lady of Sorrows Church); in particular, he liked outings with the OLOS Leisure Group. He also enjoyed traveling with nearby Saint Maximillian Kolbe’s Young at Heart group. While traveling with his wife, children, and friends both in the USA and internationally, Bill enjoyed playing the role of the group’s “photo-journalist.”
Memorial Visitation will be held at Our Lady of Sorrows, 330 Lebanon St., Monroe, OH 45050, on Friday, July 12, from 9am until Mass of Christian Burial at 11am. Immediately following the mass, all are welcome to attend a luncheon to celebrate Bill’s life at the church. Memorial donations may be made to the church.
